Heat pumps: what actually decides the outcome

A heat pump returns several kilowatt-hours of heat per kilowatt-hour of electricity, but that ratio collapses in a poorly insulated building. So we check the insulation and the temperature regime of the emitters before sizing the unit: a heat pump fitted to high-temperature radiators in a leaky envelope always disappoints.

Replacing a fossil-fuel boiler qualifies for cantonal support under the Programme Bâtiments. The application must be submitted before the work starts — we flag that at quotation stage, not afterwards.

How we work

Technical visit, calculation of the required output, selection of unit positions taking noise and facade constraints into account, then an itemised quotation. In a co-ownership we supply the technical file needed for the general meeting's approval. Commissioning is documented, and the installation can stay under a service contract if you wish.

Does a heat pump work in severe cold?

Yes. Current models operate down to roughly −15 °C, with efficiency falling in very cold weather; sizing accounts for that.

Do radiators have to be replaced to switch to a heat pump?

Not always. A hybrid arrangement that keeps the existing boiler as backup often avoids the replacement. The answer depends on your system's temperature regime.

Can air conditioning be installed without an outdoor unit?

Yes, and it is frequently the only option accepted on protected facades in Geneva and Lausanne. We fit these systems regularly.

Is the co-ownership's approval required?

For an outdoor unit visible on the facade, almost always. We prepare the description and visuals to present to the meeting.
